I’m still on my Hold Steady kick and just thinking about History Lesson Part II, the song that mentions other artists in the lyrics. I started thinking that there are so many other songs that mention other artists. Here are some of my favorites. I’ll start with The Hold Steady is they go crazy with the references in this song.
The Hold Steady “We Can Get Together”-
She said Hüsker Dü got huge, but they started in St. Paul
“Do you remember?” makes no sense at all
And heaven is the whole of the heart and paradise is by the dashboard light
Utopia’s a band, they sang “Love Is the Answer,” and I think they’re probably right,
Wilco “Heavy Metal Drummer” –Playing KISS records, beautiful and stoned
Cheap Trick– “Surrender” – Rolling numbers, rock and rolling got my KISS records out
The Replacements Alex Chilton I never travel far, without a little Big Star
Weezer “El Scorcho” I asked you to go to the Green Day concert. You said you never heard of them
Beastie Boys “Sure Shot ” Everything I do is funky like Lee Dorsey
Steely Dan “Hey Nineteen“- “Hey Nineteen. That’s Aretha Franklin
Bob Dylan “Thunder On The Mountain” I was thinking about Alicia Keys, couldn’t keep from crying, When she was born in Hell’s kitchen, I was living down the line. I’m wondering where in the world Alicia Keys could be. I been looking for her ever clear through Tennessee.
New Radicals “You Get What You Give” –Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson, Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson, You’re all fakes Run to your mansions, come around we’ll kick your ass in.
Ramones “Rock And Roll Radio” – Will you remember Jerry Lee, John Lennon, T-Rex and Ol’ Moulty (I had to look up Ol’ Moulty. I had no idea who he was. It was worth looking up. Plus Bonus song!)
I made a Spotify playlist with the songs, and as Weezer might have sung like they do in “El Scorcho” How cool is that? Feel free to add to the playlist.
