Sir George Ivan Morrison aka Van Morrison is now part of the septuagenarian generation. He may be far past his days of appealing to a pop audience but like each following generation, there will be those kids that will do the research and learn that the musical styles of Ed Sheeran, The Lumineers and even the confessional lyrical style of Taylor Swift would not exist were it not for Van the Man. These kids will go their dorm room and pull up “Astral Weeks” and have their world rocked by the sheer poetic brilliance and mixture of jazz, folk and blues.
This opening stanza just floors me every time I look at it.
If I ventured in the slipstream
Between the viaducts of your dream
Where immobile steel rims crack
And the ditch in the back roads stop
Could you find me?
Would you kiss-a my eyes?
To lay me down
In silence easy
To be born again
I doubt we will every see lyrics like this ever again.
Do yourself a favor and raise a pint and give Astral Weeks…or any Van Morrison record for that matter a listen. The world is a better place because he has graced us with his talents.

This is also a great opportunity to post one of my favorite performances with Van playing “Caravan” with The Band in the film “The Last Waltz”. Keep kicking, Van!
