While young fans were gathering in the desert at Coachella to celebrate music of the future and recent past, people aged above their 40’s gathered together to celebrate music’s golden past in Cleveland for the 27th Annual Rock Hall induction ceremony.
Part of the fun of the induction ceremony is trying to figure out which estranged band will set aside it’s differences, make nice and play together for one night. There is a long list of artists that could not make nice for one night. You can now add Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin to the list of no-shows. They couldn’t show up because of reasons in their own mind.
The other fun part is the actual induction speech. It’s usually done by a peer or celebrity fan of the band and it’s always fun to hear them geek out and remember why they loved their music. Here are a few of my favorite quotes.
John Mellencamp actually brought the Donovan album “Fairy Tale” he owned as a kid: “I wasn’t just listening to Donovan, I was living Donovan. He was my inspiration. One of the original originals.”
Bette Midler on Laura Nyro “I loved her the moment I dropped the needle on the vinyl. “She was the very essence of New York City. Not in the gritty real sense, but in the passionate, romantic, ethereal, eternal sense.
Chris Rock on discovering the Red Hot Chili Peppers after wondering into the wrong music club: “My friends and I were like, ‘What the fuck is this shit? There’s a lot of white people in here. They came out and I couldn’t understand a fucking word they said, and they had socks on their dicks! I had never been to a white show before, so I thought all white groups put socks on their dicks. Years later, they’re one of the biggest groups in the world and getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They have black ties on their dicks tonight.”
