When the Grammy nomination come out you usually hold your breath and hope that they well represent your favorite music genre. I think since they’ve changed the requirements for voting, the Grammy committee has been pretty accurate in their selections.
This year might be the year that the Grammy committee threw up its arms in the air (like they just don’t care) and declared they don’t know what the Rock music genre is anymore. I don’t know if it’s a good or bad sign that the Rock Album category is a hot mess. It looks like these are albums that the Grammy committee wanted to recognize but had nowhere to put them so they just tossed them into this category. I’m sure Folkie James Bay is probably as surprised as anyone to be in the company of metal band Slipknot. Muse and Death Cab for Cutie would a better fit in Alternative. Highly Suspect would be the only band in the correct category.
“Chaos and the Calm,” James Bay
“Kintsugi,” Death Cab for Cutie
“Mister Asylum,” Highly Suspect
” .5: The Gray Chapter,” Slipknot
If you switched Alternative group of nominees for Rock Album, I don’t think anyone would blink an eye. Bjork is probably the only truly Alternative artist on this list
Alternative Music Album
“Sound & Color,” Alabama Shakes
“The Waterfall,” My Morning Jacket
“Currents,” Tame Impala
“Star Wars,” Wilco
Rock is dead. Long live Rock!
