Today on New Music Tuesday we celebrate the producer because without Swedish born pop producer Max Martin we would not have Backstreet Boys songs like “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” or “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” or “I Want It That Way”. Take a look at his song production catalog. It’s quite impressive. Now no matter what you think of the Backstreet Boys you have got to admire the production of these songs. You might cringe if you hear “Wannabe” by The Spice Girls but “Quit Playing Games” still sounds good. You just gotta close your eyes so you don’t see the dream boys singing it. But the simple, clean production of the song makes it a standout track. So close your eyes and give a listen
By they way, Backstreet’s back (alright?) with Max Martin at the helm for the song “In A World Like This”. Close your eyes and listen.
Robin Thicke’s got nice, thick hair but I don’t think he would have the massive hit without Pharrell Williams. The man knows his way around a beat and how to use them effectively. His production discography is insane. I guess this is to let you know that Robin Thicke has a new album out but since Pharell only appears on Blurred Lines we’ll just focus on that song which also gives me an opportunity to post the NSFW video.
Ethan Johns has produced some of my favorite albums of the past fifteen years including Ryan Adams “Heartbreaker”, Ray LaMontagne’s “Gossip In The Grain” and this year’s brilliant album by Laura Marling “Once I Was An Eagle”. He’s now created his own album. It has the sparseness of “Once I Was An Eagle” which helps bring the lyrics to the forefront. It’s why he’s a songwriter’s favorite producer. Here’s the first cut from Ethan’s album “If Not Now Then When?”, “Hello Sunshine” and also I’ve included “Red Roster Blue” . Dig that Hammond organ!
