As a teenager in the 80’s Bob Dylan did not matter to me. He was preaching about the Lord, he was releasing crappy albums and he was rapping on the opening of a Kurtis Blow song. As a kid, I was so not interested and was frankly baffled by the praise lavished on him.
What eventually drew me into his world were, of course, the songs but they were the cover songs that I liked. I remember thinking the Red Hot Chili Peppers had really come up with some clever word play with their song “Subterranean Homesick Blues”. It wasn’t until later that I discovered it was a Bob Dylan song, and a much better version to boot.
But now as an adult, I just admire this man so much. He follows his heart and sticks to his beliefs and really doesn’t care if you follow him or not.
Not matter what you think of him, the breadth of songs can not be denied with the fact that there are so many different interpretations.
Here’s a little sampler platter for you.
Happy Birthday Mr. Dylan. May you continue to find “suckcess” in your own unique way.
