The Grammy awards have been reduced from 109 to 78 categories wisely removing the distinction between male and female performances.
Of course that doesn’t mean there are still some eyebrow raising moments.
The most pleasant surprise is the recognition of Bon Iver. The song “Holocene” was nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. Bon Iver with nominated for Best Alternative Music Album and even though this is his second album he was nominated in the Best New Artist category.
It may be time to change the name Folk. Here are the nominees for the Best Folk Album category. None of them seem Folk to me. I think the Folk and Americana categories just need to switch names. It makes more sense to me.
Here are the actual Folk nominees.
The Harrow & The Harvest by Gillian Welch (not available on Spotify). Buy it! This album should win.
Here are the Americana Album nominees
Switching the categories avoids less confusion and would give more exposure to Americana music.
Probably because of the Who Is Arcade Fire uproar after they won album of the year, it is all mainstream artists nominated this year.
This shouldn’t even be a contest. Adele should win this category, hands down.
My three disappoints are Iron & Wine and PJ Harvey (the 2011 Mercury Prize winner) did not receive even one nomination for their brilliant albums and Cults should have been nominated for Best New Artist. Maybe they’ll get nominated when their second album comes out.
The award ceremony is February 12.
