2011 Favorite Music Documentaries

Hopefully, you have a little bit of time off in the next couple of weeks so it might be a great time to catch up on some music related films from 2011.  Here are a few of my favorites.  Click on the photos to see the trailer.

1) George Harrison Living In The Material WorldLet's Not Get Carried Away George Harrison

The most interesting Beatle, in my humble opinion.  This fascinating documentary follows George’s life from his modest upbringing in Liverpool, to his fame with his Beatles, to his life following the breakup of the band.  Like all people, he struggles to practice as he preaches, trying to live a humble and simple life despite his extraordinary talents.  It’s still playing on HBO.

2) Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest

Let's Not Get Carried Away A Tribe Called Quest

Now out on DVD, one of the first rap artists to take rap into alternative music territories this documentary follows the band during their 2008 reunion tour.   Even if you’re not a rap fan or familiar with their work, it is very easy to relate to people who had a life together years ago and are now working through their past so they can work towards a future together.

3) Talihina Sky: The Story Of Kings Of Leon

Let's Not Get Carried Away Kings Of Leon

Another relationship story of how three brothers and a cousin from the extremely small and desperate town of Talihina, Oklahoma struggle with themselves and their family in their quest to become one of the biggest rock bands of this decade.   This documentary is now out of DVD.
